The students participating in the Akwa Ibom State/NNPC/MPN Schools Athletics Championships taking place at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium, Uyo, on March 7 will take time off their running, jumping and throwing to accord Governor Godswill Akpabio a gratitude reception for affording them the use of a modern stadium.
The news of the event filtered in from the office of the State Secondary Schools Sports Directorate at the weekend. In 2013, a decision was taken by
the NNPC/MPN Joint Venture to train some of the events’ champions and they had to be transported all the way to the U. J Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
“Today, it is now a thing of the past as we have in our state a brand new state of the art stadium that is one of the best in the world,” an official of the directorate noted. “He deserves our thanks and our gratitude. Before now we in sports wondered whether we would not benefit from his Uncommon Transformation Agenda, but today we are proud recipients of a legacy that can stand the test of time.”
There will be events in 12 track and field sports including 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500 metres and 100 and 400 metres relays.
The field events include Javelin, Shot Putt, Discus, High and Long Jump. Friday March 6 has been set aside for the heats and semifinals while the grand finale takes place the next day. Over 500 students from the eight sports zones of Ikot Ekpene, Uyo, Abak, Ikot Abasi, Oron, Ibiono Ibom, Eket and Etinan now in camp are set to do battle including James Effiok of Etinan who by his Zonal timing is favoured to emerge the fastest student of the championship this year.
