Iheanacho out, as Manu picks 21 for AYC

Teen sensation Kelechi Iheanacho, has been left out of the Nigerian team for the upcoming Africa Youth Championship by Flying Eagles coach, Manu Garba, who has picked 21 players for the tournament taking place in Senegal from March 8 to 22. Iheanacho, who emerged as the most valuable player of the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup, had been tipped to
lead the Flying Eagles’ charge at the AYC which serves as the qualifiers for this year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup, coming up in June in New Zealand.
The Manchester City player however picked up an injury on Tuesday playing for the English club in their UEFA Youth League Round of 16 win over Schalke. It is not yet known how long Iheanacho would be out of action but Manu, on Thursday, released a list of 21 players who will represent the country at the AYC with the 18-year-old noticeably absent.
Also missing from the 21-man list is star defender, Wilfred Ndidi, who was not released for the tournament by Belgian club, Genk. Iheanacho’s Manchester City teammate, Chidiebere Nwakali, and Tottenham Hotspur teenager, Musa Yahaya, who picked up a knee injury in the Flying Eagles’ recent win over Ghana, were also left out by coach Manu.
Wingback, Musa Muhammed, who captained the country’s U-17 team to a record fourth FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2013, will lead the pack, supported by fellow U-17 world champions, Akinjide Idowu, Izuchukwu Omego, Abdullahi Alpha, Dele Alampasu, Chidera Ezeh and Taiwo Awoniyi.

Nigeria play host Senegal, Congo and Cote d’Ivoire in Group A, while Ghana, Mali, South Africa and Zambia are in Group B. Matches will take place in the Senegalese cities of Dakar and M’Bour while all four semifinalists will fly Africa’s flag at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, scheduled for May 30 to June 20.
